Botswana : Another Biorisk Management Training by the National Health Laboraroty conducted in Francistown.

The Ministry of Health through the National Health Laboratory (NHL) and the Botswana Public Health Institute (BPHI) continues to train different laboratory scientists from other agencies involved handling biological materials. This week the training was conducted for Water Utilities Corporation Laboratory, National Public Health Laboratory, National Agricultural Research and Development Institute, Botswana Defence Force Laboratory, Gaborone DHMT, Botswana Institute for Technology Research and Innovation, Botswana Bureau of Standards, Botswana Medicines Regulatory Authority, Department of Crop Production and Department of Plant Health, Botswana Public Health Institute, Botswana International University of Science and Technology, Botswana National Veterinary Laboratory, Civil Aviation Authorities of Botswana and the Department of Water Affairs

 

On his official opening and welcome remarks, Mrindani Bochena, Principal Medical Scientist at Nyangagbwe Referral Hospital emphasised the need for training of participants on topics that speak to biorisk management as an effort to improve the country’s performance on the Biosafety and biosecurity pillar of the International Health Regulations. He mentioned that Botswana’s capacity to respond to biological threats through pandemics needs to be improved through continued trainings in subjects covered in the biorisk Management. He urged participants to take advantage of the training and use it to implement biosafety and biosecurity programs that would align their organisations to the ISO 35001:2019, a standard used for biorisk management systems.

 

The main objective of the training was to introduce participants to the concept of 35001:2019 Biorisk Management systems. This training took a deep dive into the biorisk Management strategy using the assessment and mitigation to manage biosafety and biosecurity risks associated with biological agents. It also covered audits and inspections which are used to monitor and evaluate the performance of different organisations in line with the ISO 35001:2019 standa
