The University Teaching Hospitals \u2013 Women and Newborn Hospital (UTHs-WNH) has successfully treated 25 women suffering from pelvic floor disorders as part of its Urogynecology Week initiative.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The specialized surgeries were performed by a team of Urogynecology surgeons from UTHs-WNH, in partnership with the University of Zambia School of Medicine and the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in USA, and supported by Fistula Foundation Zambia.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The surgical team successfully treated conditions including:<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

– Pelvic organ prolapse<\/p>\n

– Fecal incontinence<\/p>\n

– Urinary incontinence<\/p>\n

– Obstetric fistula<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

According to Dr. Eugine Kaunda, Consultant Obstetrician-Gynecologist and Fistula Surgeon at UTHs-WNH, these conditions are mainly caused by childbirth-related injuries, weakened pelvic floor muscles, aging, and prolonged labor.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Dr. Kaunda noted a significant rise in the number of women seeking services, with 25 patients operated on since the initiative began, compared to 15 in April.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The women undergoing the surgeries have thanked the government and the surgical team for the prompt and life-changing intervention.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The women have appealed to the government to continue raising awareness about pelvic floor conditions, emphasizing the importance of including men in efforts to support women’s health.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

They also shared their disappointment that some of their partners were not supportive during their time of need.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The Urogynecology Week initiative, held from August 18th to 22nd, 2025, aims to raise awareness about pelvic health and provide life-changing treatment for women from across Zambia.<\/p>\n

UTHs-WNH remains committed to providing specialized care and support to women with pelvic floor disorders.<\/p>\n
