Global childhood vaccination rates have stabilized after declining during the COVID-19 pandemic, but more than 14 million infants remain unvaccinated<\/strong>, United Nations agencies warned on Tuesday, noting that disinformation and international aid cuts now pose new threats<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cDrastic aid cuts, combined with misinformation about vaccine safety, threaten to undo decades of progress,\u201d<\/strong> said Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus<\/strong>, Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO)<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

In 2024<\/strong>, 85% of children<\/strong> in the target age group received all three doses of the diphtheria, tetanus, and pertussis (DTP)<\/strong> vaccine (109 million children<\/strong>), according to data released by WHO and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF)<\/strong>. The third dose is considered a key indicator of global immunization coverage.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s one percentage point higher than in 2023<\/strong>, representing an additional one million children<\/strong>. These are modest gains<\/strong>, the UN said, while many challenges remain<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Unequal Access to Vaccines Persists<\/h3>\n

In 2024<\/strong>, 14.3 million children<\/strong> globally were considered \u201czero-dose\u201d children<\/strong>\u2014those who had not received a single vaccine dose<\/strong>. While this is a slight improvement from 14.5 million two years ago, it remains higher than the 2019 figure<\/strong> (13.0 million), before the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted health services.<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cThe good news is that we have succeeded in vaccinating more children with life-saving vaccines,\u201d said Catherine Russell, Executive Director of UNICEF, <\/strong>\u201cbut millions of children remain unprotected against preventable diseases.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

According to WHO, the world is \u201coff track\u201d<\/strong> to meet the goal of 90% coverage<\/strong> for key life-saving vaccines among children and adolescents by 2030<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

In this regard, the report emphasizes that access to vaccines remains highly unequal<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Budget Cuts and Conflict<\/h3>\n

The UN notes that conflicts and humanitarian crises<\/strong> can quickly reverse progress in vaccination.<\/p>\n

A quarter of the world\u2019s infants live in just 26 countries<\/strong> affected by fragility, conflict, or humanitarian crises<\/strong>, and these children account for half of all unvaccinated children worldwide<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Alarmingly, in half of these countries, the number of unvaccinated children increased sharply<\/strong>, rising from 3.6 million in 2019 to 5.4 million in 2024<\/strong>\u2014underscoring the urgent need to include vaccination in humanitarian interventions<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

This situation could worsen further due to reductions in international aid<\/strong>, including from the United States<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cOur ability to respond to outbreaks in nearly 50 countries has been disrupted by budget cuts,\u201d<\/strong> warned Ephrem Lemango<\/strong>, head of immunization at UNICEF<\/strong>, during a press conference.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

The Role of Disinformation<\/h3>\n

While lack of access<\/strong> is the primary cause of low vaccine coverage, UN agencies also stress the danger of vaccine misinformation<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

In 2024<\/strong>, 60 countries<\/strong> experienced \u201cmajor or disruptive\u201d measles outbreaks<\/strong>, nearly double the number in 2022 (33 countries)<\/strong>, according to the report.<\/p>\n

More than 30 million children remain under-vaccinated<\/strong>, and as a result, the number of countries facing significant outbreaks is on the rise<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\n

A decline in confidence<\/strong> in \u201cvaccine safety\u201d<\/strong> contributes to gaps in herd immunity<\/strong>, which can be dangerous and lead to epidemic outbreaks<\/strong>, explained Kate O\u2019Brien<\/strong>, Director of Immunization at WHO, during a briefing in Geneva<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

According to UNICEF, urgent action<\/strong> is needed to overcome challenges such as shrinking health budgets<\/strong>, fragile health systems<\/strong>, disinformation<\/strong>, and conflict-related access issues<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\n

\u201cNo child should die of a disease we know how to prevent<\/strong>,\u201d emphasized Catherine Russell<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
