{"id":7141,"date":"2025-05-12T17:34:10","date_gmt":"2025-05-12T17:34:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/afiyafrica.com\/?p=7141"},"modified":"2025-05-12T17:34:10","modified_gmt":"2025-05-12T17:34:10","slug":"the-nursing-workforce-is-growing-but-deep-inequalities-persist","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/afiyafrica.com\/index.php\/en\/news\/the-nursing-workforce-is-growing-but-deep-inequalities-persist\/","title":{"rendered":"\u00ab\u00a0The nursing workforce is growing, but deep inequalities persist.\u00a0\u00bb"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class='booster-block booster-read-block'>\n                <div class=\"twp-read-time\">\n                \t<i class=\"booster-icon twp-clock\"><\/i> <span>Read Time:<\/span>2 Minute, 51 Second                <\/div>\n\n            <\/div><p class=\"\" data-start=\"137\" data-end=\"432\">The global nursing workforce grew from 27.9 million in 2018 to 29.8 million in 2023, but major disparities remain in the availability of caregivers across regions and countries, according to a report published by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the International Council of Nurses (ICN).<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"434\" data-end=\"673\">This report, <em data-start=\"447\" data-end=\"482\">State of the World\u2019s Nursing 2025<\/em>, highlights \u201cpersistent and growing inequalities\u201d in the sector, particularly in the distribution of nurses, their training, salaries, working conditions, and shortages of trained personnel.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"675\" data-end=\"851\"><strong>\u201cThis trend of inequality recurs across regions and within them, between countries and within countries, and according to countries\u2019 income classifications,\u201d<\/strong> the report states.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"853\" data-end=\"1072\">The consequences of these disparities affect patient care and health outcomes, the functioning of health systems, health equity and access to care, universal health coverage, and broader economic and social development.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1074\" data-end=\"1099\"><strong data-start=\"1074\" data-end=\"1099\">Addressing Inequality<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1101\" data-end=\"1486\"><strong>\u201cInequalities within the global nursing workforce mean that a large portion of the world\u2019s population lacks access to essential health services, potentially threatening progress toward universal health coverage (UHC), global health security, and health-related Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs),\u201d note the WHO and ICN, stressing that these inequalities \u201cmust be urgently addressed.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1488\" data-end=\"1807\"><strong>\u201cWe cannot ignore the imbalances that shape the global nursing landscape. On International Nurses Day, I urge countries and partners to use this report as a roadmap\u2014showing us where we\u2019ve come from, where we are, and where we need to go\u2014as quickly as possible,\u201d<\/strong> said WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1809\" data-end=\"1942\">Data analysis revealed that the number of nurses worldwide would reach 29.8 million in 2023, up from 27.9 million in the 2018 report.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1944\" data-end=\"1975\"><strong data-start=\"1944\" data-end=\"1975\">Risk of Shortages in Africa<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1977\" data-end=\"2205\">However, the WHO noted that data reporting had improved for its second report and also emphasized that \u201cthe global distribution and density of caregivers in 2023 are highly inequitable and mask a shortage of 5.8 million nurses.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2207\" data-end=\"2398\">The UN health agency\u2019s analysis shows that the estimated global nurse shortage declined from 6.2 million in 2020 to 5.8 million in 2023 and is expected to drop further to 4.1 million by 2030.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2400\" data-end=\"2543\">Nevertheless, nearly 70% of the projected shortages by 2030 will affect the African and Eastern Mediterranean regions, according to the report.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2545\" data-end=\"2824\">It also reveals that around 78% of the world\u2019s nurses work in countries that represent only 49% of the global population. The study further suggests that high-income countries, which account for just 17% of the world\u2019s population, are home to 46% of the global nursing workforce.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2545\" data-end=\"2824\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-7142 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/afiyafrica.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/image1024x768-1-1-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/afiyafrica.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/image1024x768-1-1-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/afiyafrica.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/image1024x768-1-1-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/afiyafrica.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/image1024x768-1-1.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"53\" data-end=\"100\"><strong data-start=\"53\" data-end=\"100\">Disproportionate Access to Nursing Services<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"102\" data-end=\"317\">More broadly, the findings indicate that one in seven nurses globally\u2014and 23% in high-income countries\u2014was born abroad, highlighting the reliance on international migration. This is a situation that risks worsening.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"319\" data-end=\"565\">High-income countries, in particular, need to prepare for a significant wave of retirements and reassess their dependence on foreign-trained healthcare personnel by strengthening bilateral agreements with the countries where nurses are recruited.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"567\" data-end=\"877\">On another note, although the global average density is 37.1 nurses per 10,000 inhabitants, this figure is not evenly distributed across regions and nations. In fact, the nurse density in the WHO European Region is five times higher than in the African and Eastern Mediterranean regions, the report points out.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"879\" data-end=\"1052\">Furthermore, gender and equity remain central concerns within the nursing profession.
