This announcement marks a major milestone in Africa CDC\u2019s continued efforts to rally political leadership, domestic financing, and unified continental action around the New Public Health Order and the Lusaka Agenda<\/strong><\/p>\n

In a strong act of continental solidarity,\u00a0His Excellency Jo\u00e3o Louren\u00e7o, President of the Republic of Angola and Chairperson of the African Union,\u00a0announced a landmark voluntary contribution of USD 5 million to the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC), reaffirming Angola\u2019s leadership and enduring commitment to strengthening regional health security and sustainable health financing.<\/p>\n

The announcement came after a high-level meeting held earlier that week, on April 21, in Luanda between President Louren\u00e7o and Dr. Jean Kaseya, Director General of Africa CDC. During the meeting, the two leaders discussed regional health priorities and the urgent need to mitigate the impact of declining development assistance.<\/p>\n

Reacting to the pledge, Dr. Kaseya commended President Louren\u00e7o\u2019s bold and visionary leadership: \u201cPresident Louren\u00e7o\u2019s leadership reflects Africa\u2019s collective determination to finance our health future,\u201d\u00a0said Dr. Kaseya. \u201cThis commitment is not only historic\u2014it sends a powerful signal that Africa is ready to lead from the front, with bold investments and African-led solutions.\u201d<\/p>\n

President Louren\u00e7o also committed to convening a\u00a0Committee of African Heads of State to champion the implementation of Africa CDC\u2019s continental strategy, \u201cRethinking African Health Financing in a New Era\u201d\u00a0\u2014 a bold response to the\u00a0sharp 70% decline\u00a0in external development assistance for health across the continent.<\/p>\n

In support of local manufacturing, Dr. Kaseya announced that Africa CDC will support Angola\u2019s plan for production of mosquito bed nets \u2014an initiative aimed at strengthening vector control and expanding regional production capacity. President Louren\u00e7o welcomed Africa CDC\u2019s commitment to advancing local manufacturing of health commodities and confirmed that a major national initiative aligned with this vision will soon be launched.<\/p>\n

The two leaders also discussed Angola\u2019s response to the ongoing\u00a0cholera outbreak, with Dr. Kaseya commending the country\u2019s efforts and reaffirming Africa CDC\u2019s full financial and technical support. He further acknowledged Angola\u2019s\u00a0essential role in advancing continental solidarity and public health resilience.<\/p>\n
