Merck Foundation<\/strong>\u00a0(Merck-Foundation.com<\/a>), the philanthropic arm of Merck KGaA Germany in partnership with\u00a0African First Ladies<\/strong>\u00a0launched a new children\u2019s storybook \u2013\u00a0\u2018Sugar Free Jude\u2019<\/strong>\u00a0to promote healthy lifestyle and raise awareness on the early detection, prevention, and management of Diabetes for children and youth across Africa in English, French and Portuguese.<\/p>\n

Senator, Dr. Rasha Kelej, CEO of Merck Foundation<\/strong>\u00a0expressed, \u201cI am very happy to bring to you Merck Foundation\u2019s new children storybook\u2013\u00a0\u2018Sugar Free Jude\u2019<\/strong>\u00a0in partnership with my dear sisters, the\u00a0African First Ladies<\/strong>\u00a0which is currently available on our social media and websites and will be distributed soon in our partner countries. Through our new children storybook, we want to promote a healthy lifestyle and raise awareness on the early detection, prevention, and management of Diabetes, from a young age, to remind all of you that together we can fight diabetes every day and that health is our only wealth.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u2018Sugar Free Jude\u2019 is a story of a young school-going boy, Jude, whose daily life is affected when he is diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes. Jude was able to manage his health condition with help from his family, friends and teachers at school and he became the advocate to fight diabetes in his school and community\u201d.<\/p>\n

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), almost 70% of the African population living with Diabetes is unaware of their condition and about 45 million adult population have Impaired Glucose Tolerance (IGT) which places them at high risk of developing type 2 diabetes.<\/p>\n

\u201cJude symbolizes the many young men and women in Africa who suffer from Diabetes but are unaware of their condition.<\/p>\n

Early signs and symptoms of Diabetes such as frequent urination, increased thirst, feeling tired and hungry, vision problems, slow wound healing, and yeast infections must not be ignored. In case one experiences any of these symptoms, one must consult a doctor and get tested. Diabetes management is a lifestyle change, those living with this condition have to eat healthy, exercise regularly, stop smoking, and limit alcohol, sugar and salt intake\u201d, explained\u00a0Senator Dr. Rasha Kelej<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Merck Foundation has also released three Songs in three languages named\u00a0\u2018NO more Diabetes, Sugar Free\u2019<\/strong>\u00a0in English,\u00a0\u2018Dites non au Diab\u00e8te\u2019<\/strong>\u00a0in French and \u2018Chega de Diabete\u2019 in Portuguese. And recently has released the remix of the three languages.<\/p>\n

These songs have been sung by\u00a0Cwezi<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0from\u00a0Ghana<\/strong>\u00a0for English Version,\u00a0Laura Beg<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0from\u00a0Mauritius<\/strong>\u00a0for the French Version, and\u00a0Blaze<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0from\u00a0Mozambique<\/strong>\u00a0for the Portuguese Version. The songs talk about promoting a healthy lifestyle and raising awareness on the early detection and prevention of Diabetes.<\/p>\n

Through our new children storybook, we want to promote a healthy lifestyle and raise awareness on the early detection, prevention, and management of Diabetes, from a young age<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n

Moreover, through\u00a0\u201cMerck Foundation Diabetes Blue Points Program\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0in partnership with\u00a0African First Ladies, Ministries of Health, and Medical Societies<\/strong>, Merck Foundation has provided\u00a0more than 720 scholarships for doctors from 45 Countries<\/strong>, of one-year Post-Graduate Diploma and two-year Master degree in both Preventive Cardiovascular Medicine, Endocrinology and Diabetes, and 3 months Diabetes Mastercourse.<\/p>\n

Merck Foundation<\/strong>\u00a0together with\u00a0African First Ladies<\/strong>, has also introduced Awards for Media, Fashion Designers, Filmmakers, Musicians\/ Singers, and new potential talents in these fields from African countries to\u00a0Promote a healthy lifestyle and raise awareness about prevention and early detection of Diabetes and Hypertension.<\/strong>\u00a0Details of the awards:<\/p>\n
